CGST, SGST and IGST explained
For sales within one state (intrastate), GST splits equally: 18% GST = 9% CGST (central) + 9% SGST (state). For sales between states (interstate), the full amount is charged as IGST. The total tax is identical either way — only the split differs.
How to remove GST from a price
To find the base price from a GST-inclusive amount, divide by (1 + rate). Example: ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% GST → ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base + ₹180 GST. Simply subtracting 18% gives the wrong answer.
Frequently asked questions
Adding GST: ₹10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800 GST, total ₹11,800. If intrastate, that's ₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST. If interstate, ₹1,800 IGST.
Extracting the base price from a GST-inclusive total. Formula: Base = Inclusive ÷ (1 + rate/100). Used by shopkeepers and accountants to find pre-tax values from MRP.
