How to calculate a discount
The discount amount = original price × (discount % ÷ 100). The final price = original price − discount amount. Shortcut: final price = original price × (1 − discount rate). Example: $250 with 30% off = $250 × 0.70 = $175.
Frequently asked questions
Multiply the price by 0.80 (100% - 20% = 80%). Example: 20% off £150 = £150 × 0.80 = £120. Or find 20% (£30) and subtract from £150.
A discount is typically a temporary price reduction. A markdown is a permanent reduction. Both are calculated the same way as a percentage reduction from the original price.
They compare the discounted selling price to their cost price. If cost = £60 and they sell at £90 (33% off £135), they still make £30 profit but at a reduced margin.
