How salary rates are calculated

Understanding how your monthly salary translates to a daily or hourly rate matters for freelancers quoting clients, employees evaluating offers, and HR teams benchmarking pay.

Monthly to daily rate

For a 5-day week: 260 working days ÷ 12 months = 21.67 working days/month. Daily rate = Monthly salary ÷ 21.67. For a 6-day week: 312 days ÷ 12 = 26 days/month.

Monthly to hourly rate

Daily rate ÷ 8 hours = hourly rate. A $5,000/month salary → $230.77/day → $28.85/hour (based on 5-day, 8-hour working pattern).

Freelancers: To set your day rate, multiply your desired annual income by 1.3–1.4 (to cover taxes, holidays, and unpaid time) then divide by working days.

Frequently asked questions

Divide monthly salary by working days per month (21.67 for 5-day week), then by 8 hours. Example: $5,000 ÷ 21.67 ÷ 8 = approximately $28.85 per hour.

On average 21.67 working days for a 5-day week (260 days ÷ 12 months). Individual months vary from 20 to 23 depending on weekends and public holidays.

Multiply monthly gross salary by 12. If you receive a 13th-month bonus (common in UAE, Philippines, and parts of Europe), multiply by 13 for total annual pay.

A day rate is your daily pay. Calculated as: monthly salary ÷ (working days per week × 52 ÷ 12). Freelancers and contractors often quote day rates to clients.

Depends on the country and contract. UAE labour law typically uses 30 days for leave and some calculations. For actual day rate calculations, working days are used.
